He has been hiding around the Children's Room this summer as part of the 'Dig Into Reading' theme. Kids who find Jerome tell a library staffer, then get a prize from the treasure chest. A lot of kids have found Jerome, even though he moves around every day. Sometimes it's a very tricky search. Some kids come into the Children's Room and look for Jerome before they do everything else, so Jerome has agreed to keep up the game until the end of August. Come see if you can find him!Plainfield Libraryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00438463499810350107noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6091313661006761105.post-70002365307792296872013-07-19T16:09:00.001-04:002013-07-19T16:11:58.563-04:00July App of the Month: Shazam

Exploration ideas…

The Shazam app can be fun to use alone or with your friends.

Try these ideas:

While traveling on a road trip in the car as a passenger, try scanning the radio stations in the area every once in a while. Shazam songs you’re unfamiliar with.

Head to a local music show or concert and try Shazamming a live performance to see if the band’s or artists’ songs appear.

Watching a commercial and trying to pinpoint that song in the background? Shazam it!

Link your Shazam account to Facebook and encourage your friends to as well. Check and see what songs everyone is Shazamming. Are there any similarities? Try listening to what your friends have tagged to discover new music.

Shazam an artist you’re familiar with, and then try to guess what will show up in the “Artist’s popular songs” section. Check to see if you’re right!

New books by Alex Kava and Daniel Silva I highly recommend to readers. Silva’s is titled The English Girl and Kiva’s is Stranded. I am also picking The White Princess by Philippa Gregory for fans of English history. Other new books include The Highway by C.J. Box, Death Angel by Linda Fairstein and James Lee Burke's The Light of the World. As the Readers Advisor readers are always recommending authors to me and I am always happy to pass on their suggestions. Recently one of our readers told me that he had been reading John Hart who writes mysteries. He said that The Last Child by Hart was one of the best mysteries he has ever read So I thought I would pass this along to those of you who are always looking for a new author to read. Hart’s other books are The King of Lies and Down River. While I can’t read everything readers recommend to me I am always happy to hear when they have discovered a new author. Nothing pleases me more than to hear from a reader who tells me that they have loved an author I have recommended to them. Enjoy the rest of summer with a good book!
The data was collected by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. On a makes-you-feel-good-about-humanity note, there are more public libraries in the United States than McDonalds or Starbucks locations. The Field Guide section lets you browse and search through wildlife of all kinds. For example, you could click on one of the pictures in grid mode to view recent spottings, or you could click the location button to browse by location, or you can click the list button to browse in a list format.

Alternatively, you can tap the magnifying glass button, then type “ant” in to the search box; you’ll be presented with spottings of ants listed by others.
exploration ideas...

The Project Noah app can be fun to use alone or as a family and is appropriate for all ages, though littler ones will need help from an adult or teen to use and understand the app.

Try these ideas:

Go on a family hike in a local, state, or national park. See who can find recognizable pieces of nature and who can find unrecognizable pieces of nature. Be sure to log what you find in you’re my Noah section in Project Noah!

No time to head to the park? Have the kids slowly wander around the yard or driveway for a few minutes, looking for wildlife. They might be surprised at what they find… and you might be, too! Don’t forget to keep track of what they find in the My Noah section in Project Noah!

Select a mission or two to participate in as a family in the Missions section of Project Noah. Then, set aside a time each week to make progress on the mission and see how others are progressing as well.

Download the Project Noah app on a few devices within the immediate or extended family or in your group of friends, then compete to see who can get the most patches or make the most spottings! Try creating a family or friends group on Facebook to share your Project Noah activity, missions, patches, and findings!

Hopefully
you know about Summer Reading Club, that wild, busy, fun time for the
library. But what about May? In the Children's Room we spend May helping
people as always, but also cleaning out closets (maybe!) and the big
May thing… CLASS VISITS. We love ‘em!

Every
visit is different somehow. Some even involve the Indiana Room or a
wander through the art gallery upstairs, but here's a common pattern.
“Hello! Let’s get started! Who has been here before? Who has not? Glad
you're all here today. Time for a short tour, follow me! There are the
beginning reader books, there are the computers. Did you know we have
board games? Who has gone to a library program in this activity room?
You can use our textbooks for homework if your forget your at school.
This is our new and amazing Art Zone, peek in!” And so on. Usually we
read a short, rollicking, story. There’s a pep talk about the great
programs planned for summer and we reveal the newest Summer Reading
t-shirt (get them while they last! Hint – this year the shirt features
an upside down mouse.) Some classes look around or play with the giant
caterpillar, train table, or puzzles. Others bring library cards, so
they can pick some books to take home. Time runs out, so we meet on the
zebra rug to say goodbye with invitations to come back any time, while
peeking to see if the next class is already lining up outside the
doors.

A photograph has a soul of its own. It represents something we have seen and want to keep as a memento, a special event or occasion encountered. A moment captured in time and space that can stir memories and create fantasies. The more we look, the more we see. The more we see, the more we respond.

It's said that the photographer communicates in the language of light, form and color. And so is it any wonder that my love of photography is so connected to this journey of my spirit - both containing positives and negatives, black, white, and color, and of course darkness and light.

During the past few days I've set out on foot with my camera and my three canine companions to capture signs of Spring. I found myself drawn to the trees in various stages of new growth along the country roads we traveled. Photographer Joyce Tenneson observes, "Trees, throughout history have inspired deep symbolic meaning in cultures around the world. The 'tree of life' metaphor expresses the mystical concept that all forms of life are connected. When we stand with the trees, we feel they are part of us. They give us a sense of belonging to the greater universe." In his book Small Graces, Kent Nerburn says of trees"[T]hey shave so much to teach us. Like us, their roots are unseen, and no matter how glorious the front they put up for the world, their true strength lies in the hard work that takes place unnoticed beneath the surface. They have good years and bad years and yet they endure. They know how to withstand all seasons, to be patient with adversity, to store up strength for the hard times. When the wind blows, they understand the power of the unseen, and bow their heads before it."

When I made my living with photography, I specialized in portraits of people and capturing their esssence. Although people have now been replaced by trees, I still find that I am seeking a spiritual element in my subjects. My thoughts resonate with Joyce Tenneson when she says, "As with my people portraits I seek to reveal in a single frame, the complex lives of trees - including their hardships and tragedies. Perhaps this is why I've been drawn to photograph trees with broken and misshapen forms, as well as those whose strong presence give them an aura of benevolent power. Their life journey is visible as is often true of the human face...I have found in nature 'icons' that speak to me personally."
An old tree had fallen and it's crown was covered by a blanket of snow. There was something powerful about it that spoke to me and I snapped the shutter. While in the darkroom developing the print I was drawn to the image even more and I printed it over and over, varying the contrast by manipulating the amount of light that hit the negative.

I realized the small photograph is a symbol of my life. Although it is predominately black and white, it has many shadings and combinations of those two contrasts. The background is tangled and blurred, but the foreground gives way to the strength and beauty of the paths of branches that lead back to the unseen.
Featuring George C. Scott, Peter Sellers and a very young James Earl
Jones, Stanley Kubrick’s classic film tackles the absurdity of the Cold
War and the doctrine of Mutually Assured Destruction in the only sane
way - dark humor. Peter Sellers especially shines in this movie playing
three of the major roles - President Mervin Muff (loosely based on
Adlai Stevenson), Dr. Strangelove (a not-so-reformed ex-Nazi rocket
scientist) and Royal Air Force Group Captain Lionel Mandrake whose
interaction with the paranoid, insane American Air Force General Jack
Ripper (played perfectly by Sterling Hayden) is, to my mind, the funniest conversation on film. You’ll never think about the fluoridation of water the
same way.
like musicals. There. I said it. I like the idea of a world where it is
totally normal for people to spontaneously break into song and dance.
What if those people were our country’s Founding Fathers? Such is the
amazing premise of this Tony-award winning musical dramatizing the
debate and drafting of the Declaration of Independence. Featuring
William Daniels as John Adams, Ken Howard as Thomas Jefferson and
Gwyneth Paltrow’s mom (the lovely Blythe Danner) as Martha Jefferson. Also, before I read David McCoullugh's biography of John Adams, everything I knew about our 2nd president came from the following song.

Casino Royale (2006) I'm a big fan of the James Bond series, even the cheesy ones, which of course, is most of them. But the restart of the legendary spy series with Daniel Craig as Agent 007 in 2006 marked a notable improvement in the quality of the films. If you haven't read Sir Ian Fleming's source novels, you really should. The Bond of the novels is considerably more interesting (if less dependent on silly gadgets) than the Bond of the most of the movies. Casino Royale moves the film series back toward Fleming's more interesting spy.
Star Wars (1977) The first CD I purchased with my own money was John Williams' score to Star Wars. I still hum "The Imperial March" whenever I find myself walking down a long (ideally dim) hallway. George Lucas incurred the wrath of many fans with the - let's say less than stellar - relaunch of the saga in with 1998's The Phantom Menace. And though the prequels certainly don't have the same panache as the original, there is a fun way to watch the series. So, try this sometime: watch the movies in this order by episode: 4, 5, 2, 3, 6. There is no need to ever watch Episode 1. I like this alternative order because it preserves the dramatic reveal involving Luke's paternity in Episode 5. It also makes good thematic sense to introduce the Vader/Anakin back story after that dramatic moment in Episode 5, so that the entire saga can be viewed as a father/son redemption story.
While
working the check-out desk at the library in 2011 a patron started
gushing about a television series called Downton Abbey. She explained
that the series was about an aristocratic family in England, they had
servants, etc. I listened to the patron while thinking the series
didn’t sound like my cup of tea. Just when I was thinking that the
patron said, “You would really
like it. I just know you would.” That comment surprised me especially
since I didn’t know the patron at all, and they didn’t know me. Inwardly
I thought, “Challenge accepted.” From that moment on I was prepared to
hate Downton Abbey.

Downton Abbey’s first season came out on DVD I put a hold on it at the
library and finally one day I sat down ready to hate its guts. But I
didn’t hate its guts. I absolutely freaking loved its guts!

I
loved following the lives of the Grantham and Crawley families and
their servants. The series began with the death of Downton Abbey’s heir
in the sinking of the Titanic and then delved into securing a new heir,
the distant and quite modern cousin Matthew Crawley. Lord Grantham is
of course interested in marrying off his daughters, which backfired on
more than one occasion. Lady Mary, Lord Grantham’s eldest daughter, is
my favorite of the upstairs characters. She can be selfish, arrogant and
cold, but she feels very deeply and cares about the servants
downstairs.

then there are the servants, the people who make it possible for the
aristocratic family to enjoy the cushy life they are accustomed to.
They are the grunt laborers who spend the majority of their time and
lives cleaning, primping, cooking, and caring for their masters. There
are so many great servant characters but my favorite is Daisy, the
scullery maid. She is young and unsure, but a completely genuine spirit
who never fails to make me laugh.

Participants will get a taste of Downton Abbey life with a special
English high tea at the library. Tina Jesson from Tina's Old Traditional
English Tea Kitchen will talk about life during the time of Downton
Abbey, etiquette, and master/servant relations during the post-Edwardian

If you haven’t read a John Grisham novel then
you have missed some great reading.
Grisham writes fascinating legal thrillers. Grisham practiced law for several years, but
gave up his practice after the success of his second novel The Firm which was a bestseller.
He has written some twenty-five novels and many of them have been made
into successful movies. His novels
include The Pelican Brief, The Rainmaker, and A Time to Kill. I have read
several of his books and also have enjoyed Skipping
Christmas and Playing for Pizza which
are not thrillers. Checkout Grisham and
enjoy a master of the legal genre.

programs at Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library throughout the years. As I prepare to
retire at the end of this month, I’ve had time to reflect on my past twelve years as Children’s
Services Manager.

Input from our patrons brought about many changes, such as adding Accelerated Reader labels to
books and creating neighborhoods where all of the Clifford, Dora, Star Wars and other favorite
characters and specific holiday books and movies are shelved in their own little section.

The children’s room staff made changes in the programs that we offer. We were one of the first
libraries in the state to offer programs for children starting at birth based on the Every Child
Ready to Read early literacy program endorsed by the American Library Association. In fact,
I founded and led ITELL, a task force of children’s librarians that lobbied and succeeded in
getting a children’s consultant at the state library. We also trained Indiana children’s librarians
in the Every Child Ready to Read skills and petitioned Indiana University to add early literacy
workshops for students studying to become librarians. Over the years we’ve provided a variety
of craft, art, music, cooking, sign language, and Spanish programs. Some of my favorite
programs and activities have been the Summer Reading Club, Reading with Dogs, I Can Read
Club, Harry Potter: Welcome to Hogwarts, Plainfield Arts Festival, Gingerbread House
Decorating, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and Boo at the Library. You may have seen
some of us outside of the library, too. The children’s staff received trophies for our Book Truck
Drill Team entries in the Quaker Day Parade, and we continue to meet many of you at the Kids
Summer Lunch Bunch and the 4-H Fair.

I’ve seen amazing changes in technology in the past decade. VHS tapes were the most popular
format for movies when I started working at this library, and who knew that we’d all be carrying
iPads, smart phones, and Nooks and be able to read books and magazines on them? Twelve years
ago children had to be in kindergarten and print their name before they could obtain a library
card. Now cards are issued to children of any age. Teens and tweens have been given more
respect and now have their own special space and some delightful librarians to accommodate
their needs.

I’d be remiss not to mention the wonderful support we’ve had from the Friends of the Library.
In fact, all snacks, craft supplies and performers are purchased with Friends of the Library
funding. No tax monies are used for these. Your membership in the Friends and support of their
projects, such as book sales, enable us to provide the wonderful Art Zone, craft programs and
Silly Safaris. You won’t want to miss the fantastic Water Show they’re sponsoring this summer.
It’ll be across the street on the grassy area of First Baptist Church. Be sure to wear your swimsuit
and bring a towel to dry off.

It has been my pleasure to work for you, please continue to enjoy the programs we offer and
remember that we are here to serve YOU, so your comments and suggestions are always taken very seriously. Please tell us how we can make your experiences at the library better.
Looking for a way to keep track of what books you read? Ever checked out a book from the library, got home and started reading it, only to realize "I've already read this!"Let me suggest something to help.

LibraryThing is a simple and cheap way to catalog your personal library, keep track of what you've read, what you want to read, and interact with like-minded readers. It's Facebook for bibliophiles.

Besides the great fun of cataloging your personal collection, users can also sign up for free book giveaways (often Advance Reader copies that publishers distribute to promote upcoming books) , participate in a Secret Santa exchange with other members, compare your library with others, and write reviews for your favorite (or least favorite!) books. You can also use LibraryThing to keep track of events at your favorite book related venues - the Plainfield Guilford Township Public Library is one, right? -like bookstores and libraries. LibraryThing is also a great readers' advisory tool. The user-recommended read-alikes have fast become my go-to source when I find myself asking "What should I read next?"
It is still cold enough to want to stay
indoors and snuggle up with a good “cozy” mystery. Mysteries intrigue the reader as they become
more and more engrossed in the story and try to solve the “whodunit” which is
what makes reading mysteries so enjoyable.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12pt;">My first experience with mysteries was the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew and
at an early age I was hooked. I love a
good mystery and pride myself on being able to solve them way before the final
chapter. There are several different
types of mysteries such as the caper, the hard boiled, police procedurals,
legal/medical, private eye, historical and the sleuths. If you want to read a mystery series checkout
Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum mysteries, James Lee Burke’s Dave Robicheaux
mysteries or Joanne Fluke’s Hannah Swenson mysteries which also contains
recipes since she is a bakery-owning amateur. Whether you like your mysteries on the light
side or hard boiled you will find excitement awaits you as you try to solve the
crimes!
Jack was a simple guy. Played by the rules...heck he worked at a public library for gosh sake! When Jack was at work, he did his normal functions; made coffee for the staff, sat down in the break room to get a doughnut (supplied by the director of the library every morning) and read the comic section of the local paper. He started his day at 8:30 am. He was lazy. He only kept his job at the circulation department because of his famous neck tie collection.

Working in a library has its advantages. Libraries give you access to thousands of books from which you get thousands of ideas. For someone like me, who likes to write in my free time, this access to ideas is marvelous.

My writing for fun started back in the seventh grade. One boring summer, I started on a story that I envisioned would be a transcript for a screenplay. Titled, “Hot Sun, Dry Sand,” this story ended up with pages and pages of short scenes that really went nowhere. Eventually, other activities took over in my life, and I found I was not writing as much.

When I began my writing routine again in 2007, I would scribble down thoughts on pieces of paper each day.

Jack looks up from his notebook to think about what he was doing. A dating website? Had he really come to this? Yes, he had. He typed in a search for dating websites and quickly found out how many links there were. "Wow," is all Jack could think. All of these people are trying to find someone? He was definitely not alone in the search. Jack clicked on one site with the name 'Chat First, Talk Later.' He filled out the questions and submitted it. Be da beep! Jack had his first match.

What will happen to Jack as he begins dating through 'Chat First, Talk Later?' Well, I have not written that part yet, but I think Jack will have to date quite a bit before finding the right girl for him. Stay tuned!
Books by Lisa Kleypas and J.D. Robb should please their readers. Kleypas’s book Crystal Cove continues the Friday Harbor series and Robb’s book Calculated In Death continues the In Death series. So both romance readers and mystery readers should enjoy these. Other new books are The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult once again Picoult writes about a dilemma when an old man asks Sage Singer to kill him and tells her of the heinous crime he has committed. Sage is faced with the decision of whether someone can ever redeem themselves or do they deserve to die. This will be a fascinating can’t-put-down read.

Other new books include The First Prophet by Kay Hooper, The Black Box by Michael Connelly, and Touch and Go by Lisa Gardner. So make some hot chocolate and light the fire and settle down with a good book. Enjoy the “wintery” evenings.
Richard was killed in battle against Henry Tudor (subsequently known at King Henry VII) and the whereabouts of his body remained a mystery for several hundred years. The death of Richard, and the marriage of Henry to Elizabeth of York (who, trivia buffs, was a daughter, sister, niece, wife and mother to various kings of England) ended the War of the Roses.

There's a reason why George R.R. Martin cites the War of the Roses as inspiration for his epic fantasy A Song of Ice and Fire - the political intrigue and positively dysfunctional dynamics of the Plantagenet family are legendary. They are also marvelous source material for contemporary authors of historical fiction.

And no one is doing historical fiction better right now than Hilary Mantel, the two time Booker Prize winning author. She struck gold first with Wolf Hall, a novel about Henry VIII, his marriage to Anne Boleyn and his failing out with Sir Thomas More, all told from the perspective of one of Henry's principle advisers, Thomas Cromwell. Mantel presents Henry as an almost sympathetic character, no small feat considering his popular image as a lustful, obese consumer of roasted turkey legs.
It tells the story of Anne's downfall and execution and Henry's match with Jane Seymour. A third novel, chronicling Cromwell's own fall from grace and subsequent execution is planned for the future.

Finally, Sharon Kay Penman has a stand alone novel - The Sunne in Splendour - about Richard III, whom she casts in a good light. While I have your attention, Star Wars fans, I want to ask a question. What are your thoughts on watching the now expanded canon in this order: 4, 5, 2, 3, 6? The reasoning goes like this. Episode 1 adds next to nothing to the larger storyline. Watching the movies in episode order also spoils one of the greatest cinematic surprises of all time - Luke's paternity. With the alternate order listed above, the saga becomes a more Luke Skywalker focused piece with a nice Anakin flashback midway through before the final episode (Return of the Jedi) ties the father/son redemption themes together. What do you think?
In just a few days, Barack Obama will be inaugurated for a second term as President of the United States. All politics aside, the peaceful and orderly investing of power (or in this case, the re-investing of power) that happens every four years is a big deal and worthy of celebration by conservatives, liberals and anything in between. Why not celebrate with a good movie or book?
